The composition of dark and light value is very potent. It can be very effectively used to create not only sense of depth but also mood and subtle atmosphere. I have started studying it seriously. I am making small sketches after Vermeer and Rembrandt as a way of analyzing how they did this.
I will experiment with my own and attempt to express different psychological situations and states. That would be the next stage.
The psychology course that I am slowly enjoying has led me to a fantastic book ” The man who mistook his wife for a hat” by Oliver Sacks . Very humane book that offers a glimpse on how the brain works and also how different people deal with sometimes debilitating disabilities. The author is a neurologist/ neuro-psychologist and the stories are case studies. As in the course videos this books also confirms that the working of the human brain is far from understood. I am now reading a more recent book by the same author ” The minds eye” and enjoying it very much, especially as it deals with the visual centers in the brain and parts of the brain that process or make sense of visual information.
